Expanded History
IRIS
Associates is located in Irwin, Pennsylvania, some 20 miles east of
Pittsburgh, in the heart of a highly industrialized area.
This
strategic location provides easy access to the core of our business - the
various industries of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia.
This geographical region features a wide variety of industries that
include: metal refining and processing, manufacturing, wood products, pulp
and paper, petroleum and chemical processing, mining, power generation,
and large commercial facilities. While
IRIS Associates is based in this area, our
growing reputation and client base frequently take us beyond this
tri-state region.
The
owner and principal of IRIS Associates is Maurice (Maury) Confer.
A 1979 graduate of Penn State University, Mr. Confer built a strong
reputation as a field service engineer with nearly two decades of service
for two major electrical equipment manufacturers, Westinghouse Electric
Corporation and General Electric Company.
During
this period of field service, Mr. Confer was called upon to provide
technical advice during the installation and service of large electric
motors, outdoor substation equipment, electrical distribution systems, and
rotating equipment. These
engineering assignments ranged from one day “trouble-shooting” jobs to
projects of several months on location.
Mr.
Confer gained proficiency with infrared thermography, vibration analysis,
balancing rotating equipment, shaft alignment, electrical testing, and
trouble-shooting equipment problems.
One
key assignment involved the development and implementation of a program of
regularly scheduled infrared thermography surveys for a large steel mill,
from the blast furnaces and power house through the finishing lines, some
11 departments in all. This
included a printed list of equipment and schedule for each department.
The
new inspection program immediately uncovered a number of serious problems
areas, including several with electrical components that were literally
about to fail. The program
met with great success.
In
late 1997, drawing upon his extensive experience, Mr. Confer developed the
concept of an infrared thermography inspection company that would provide
the highest level of service at competitive market rates. IRIS Associates is the culmination of his efforts.
When you
contract IRIS Associates to perform infrared thermography inspections, Mr.
Confer will personally schedule your work, perform the survey with your
company’s personnel, and prepare the report.
The level of performance and personal attention throughout the
entire inspection process is unmatched within the industry.
